Season Summary - 2006
If the score card were the only testament to the performance of those whose loyalty and efforts made it possible for Stoke Bishop to field a 2nd XI this season, then I believe it would be a grave injustice. Within the context of the past few years, where the clash of Male ego's and senior player's resignations had got the better of a championship-winning Club, it was with trepidation that I began this season wearing the Captains Cap.
2006 was a year for laying new foundations. I enjoyed the challenge of leading a different squad each week and thank all those who's suggestions and input, though occasionally overwhelming, offered much support. Our Victories were few and hard-earned and with squads of 9 and sometimes very inexperienced players, our defeats were numerously foregone conclusions. However, we became a team whose goal was not about the winning but the sheer determination to do our best and enjoy the day.
Although we will not be collecting any trophies (Division 3, here we come!), we have been rewarded by our strength of character, comradery and an ability to give 100% down to the last ball. Strangely, I noticed a bizarre tendancy for the team spirit to be greatly enhanced at the end of a good thrashing and rather down-beat having secured victory with maximum points! (which we achieved on two occasions). Let's not enjoy loosing quite so much as it could become a habit and people will start to think I'm just a crap captain!
Anyway, crap Captain or no, I have dropped my fair share of catches and scored my quota of ducks, but on a possitive note, I have tried to promote unity and an atmosphere of possitivity and Teamsmanship within the side and hope we can continue building on this for next year.
